As we all know, democracy requires elections accountable to the citizens. Without this accountability to "we the people" that every vote is counted as cast, democracy suffers.

However, most of America's elections are now being run on computers that count America's votes in secret. These secret vote counts are accountable only to the private businesses that make the computers. No citizen is allowed to look at the software or the count.

Elections are the issue that effects every other issue! We, as Americans, have serious concerns about the environment, the economy, health care, war, and education. But we cannot get change on any of these issues or vote anyone out of office without elections that are accountable to the citizens.

The reasons to participate in the National Day for Election Protection are numerous, but all come back to this: Elections are the lifeblood of democracy--if they are tainted, democracy suffers. Patriotism exists in the defense of principles upon which this nation was founded and none is more sacred than one person, one vote. The increase in voting "irregularities" and rampant disenfranchisement in recent elections is a call to arms.

So get involved. And pledge to be part of the solution.
